Climate change is reshaping the way we design and experience our cities. By integrating Nature-based Solutions in a climate-adaptive approach to urban design, streetscapes can regulate temperature, manage water more efficiently, and restore biodiversity.
This website presents the outcomes of the PNRR Tech4You research project on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Urban Areas, developed by NatureCityLAB at the University of Basilicata.
A ClimaScape is a climate-adaptive streetscape developed as a strategic spatial field for urban regeneration. Within a ClimaScape, physical and immaterial devices, infrastructures, materials, practices, and natural elements intertwine, making visible the interdependence between climate, urban form, and everyday life. By addressing the full three-dimensionality of the street as infrastructural, social, environmental, cultural, and economic space, ClimaScapes enable the integration of nature-based and climate-adaptive design approaches into the fabric of the city.
Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) are devices or actions inspired by, supported by, or working with nature to address environmental, social, and economic challenges simultaneously, while enhancing biodiversity and human well-being.
They embody new socio-ecological approaches to adaptation and resilience, relying equally on environmental performance, social value, and economic viability.
ClimaScapes platform collects exemplary projects which show how climate-adaptive design approach can be developed with Nature-based solutions in the physical space of the streetscapes. These projects are mapped out internationally according to the developed methodology.
